CD Review (from Acoustidisc)- "I'm Beginning to See the Light"
Martin Taylor & David Grisman

Martin Taylor and David Grisman front an extraordinary acoustic jazz quartet for I'm Beginning to See the Light (ACD-36), the new release from Acoustic Disc. With the impeccable rhythm section accompaniment of DGQ alumni Jim Kerwin on bass and George Marsh on drums, Scottish guitar virtuoso Taylor and mandolin maven Grisman have created a string-jazz milestone. Taylor and Grisman collaborated in 1995 on the acclaimed Tone Poems II, a historic look at both jazz and the great acoustic archtop guitars (and mandolins). The empathy and interplay developed during those session -- and subsequent live performances -- is evident in their playing on this album as new vitality is brought to classic jazz standards. Acoustic renditions of the title cut, "Autumn in New York," "Willow Weep for Me," "East of the Sun," "Lover Man" and seven others exhibit rare depth and sensitivity. The musicians are inventive and inspired, the quartet members melding into a tight, unified sound that belies the improvisational nature of this project. Co-produced by Martin and David, I'm Beginning to See the Light was recorded "live" directly to 2-track analog by David Dennison; sonically, it is one of the best recordings created by Acoustic Disc.

Watch out for the unlisted track 12a. Track 12 is actually "Bewitched..." and "If I Had You" seperated by a longer than usual gap.

The Tracks
1. I'm Beginning to See the Light 2. Autumn Leaves 3. Do You Know What It Means 4. East of the Sun
5. Autumn in New York 6. Makin' Whoopee 7. Lover Man 8. Exactly Like You 9. Willow Weep For Me 10. A Foggy Day 11. Cheek to Cheek 12. Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered 12a. If I Had You Top of Page

CD Review: The Chronological Django Reinhardt 1947 Vol.2 Classics 1046.

What a disappointment! Not Django's playing - that is never disappointing and is, on this CD, probably at it's very best. We have been led to believe by the title of this series of CDs, known for the quality of their digital transfers, that the whole Django Reinhardt catalogue would be re-issued in chronological order. Not so! The vast majority of the marvellous "Souvenirs of Django" sessions have been left out or passed by because, apparently, they were originally issued on LPs and never as 78rpm records. The four tracks from the "Souvenirs of Django" sessions that appear here and were originally issued on 78s provide a tantalising glimpse of the quality of Django's playing on the electric instrument that was available on the three original 10" LPs (Vogue LDE 049, 084 and 106). As far as I am aware the COMPLETE "Souvenirs of Django" is not currently available on CD. (See the Django Discography 25/8/47 to 13/11/47).

Of the remaining 16 tracks on this CD, 14 are currently available on the Verve Double CD "Peche a la Mouche" (Verve 835 418-2) and the remaining two (What Is This Thing.. and Ol' Man River) have been issued on Jazztime CDs but are not currently available.   Top of Page
